When you add a new dog to your family and you’re about to name it, you typically put a lot of thought into what the name should be. Maybe you base it on the dog’s color, his/her demeanor, or the name of your favorite actor or musical artist.

When we rescued our dog before Christmas a few years ago, we let my daughter choose the name.  Of course, right before the holiday, it wasn’t too surprising that she chose Jingle!

The interesting thing though, is that while American baby names have changed a lot over the years, the names of our dogs have stayed surprisingly consistent for the most part! According to the American Kennel Club, the most popular pup names are basically the same as they were about a decade or so ago.

According to dictionary.com, the most popular girl name on the list, Luna — means “the ancient Roman goddess personifying the moon.”
American Kennel Club executive secretary Gina DiNardo said choosing a name for a pet is an important task. “Dogs are an important part of our families, and people take great care in choosing a name,” she said in a media statement.

I always like to see if a dog acts or has the personality that you would expect from a dog with that name.  A male dog named Max seems like he should be tough and on guard. One you wouldn’t want to mess with, but yet loveable at the same time.

Not sure if my dog “acts” like a Jingle, but he’s part of our family and that name isn’t going anywhere!
