Who’s the No. 1 Team in the NFL Right Now?
It’s an interesting NFL season. At this point, every team has lost at least one game. That means there’s no one team that towers over everybody else, and it makes for a more interesting season. So, who’s the No. 1 team in the NFL right now?
Pinpointing the No. 1 team in the NFL at the moment isn’t an easy task. Look at the games for NFL Week 6, for example. Those upsets and closer games just show how even the playing field is right now. (Pun intended.) I stayed up late, glued to the TV on Monday (Oct. 16) watching the Dallas Cowboys barely pull off a win against the Los Angeles Chargers. Moreover, the Buffalo Bills almost fell to the New York Giants in a surprisingly close game.
Of course, the two only remaining undefeated teams in the NFL lost last weekend: the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles. Now, five teams are tied for No. 1 with 5-1 records: the 49ers, Eagles, Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs. Seeing the Detroit Lions in the same class as these elite teams – the Chiefs, Dolphins, Eagles and 49ers – is certainly a special thing.
Before we get to the No. 1 team, let’s rank the remaining top five. Right now, I would rank the Miami Dolphins at No. 5, followed by the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 4. I know what you’re thinking. The Chiefs at No. 4? But, not only did they lose their opening game, they’ve also had some really close calls this season. At No. 3, I have the Eagles, who are dealing with a ton of injuries right now. The Eagles have also had some very close games. Finally, No. 2 goes to the Lions, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a Lions fan. The Lions not only beat the Chiefs, but the Lions’ games haven’t been close, indicating that they’ve really been much stronger than the competition.

Finally, I’ve got the 49ers at No. 1. It was a tough call, though. The 49ers have displayed a consistently solid offense and defense in each game, even the game they lost, and seem recharged with new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. With Brock Purdy heading up the offense, this team remains the one to beat.
