Metal with the Mikes is giving you the chance to win a pair of tickets to see Coal Chamber with Fear Factory at the Palladium Times Square on Wednesday, September 18th!

Coal Chamber, originally formed in 1993, is one of the earliest nu-metal acts to come out of Los Angeles. The group was formed by Dez Fafara, vocalist of both Coal Chamber and DevilDriver, and Meegs Rascón under the name She’s In Pain. Originally the band featured Fafara on vocals, Rascón on guitar, Rayna Foss on bass and Jon Tor on drums. Eventually Mike Cox would replace Tor on drums and complete the Coal Chamber lineup.

Coal Chamber is most certainly a nu-metal act. Their debut album, Coal Chamber, has heavy influences from both hip-hop and alternative metal. As their music evolved, Coal Chamber incorporated more elements of gothic rock and industrial metal. The group cites a variety of influences which lead to their unique sound. Members have cited everyone from Duran Duran to Metallica and The Cure to Bad Brains as influences. Dez Fafara adopted his stage name from the former Black Flag member, Dez Cadena!

Coal Chamber quickly picked up steam and was propelled into stardom by catching the eye of several prominent figures in the metal world! Roadrunner records offered the band a contract after Dino Cazares of Fear Factory impressed them by sharing a Coal Chamber demo tape. Their second album, Chamber Music, impressed Sharon Osbourne so much that she became their manager! This led to them being included on many OzzFest lineups!

Coal Chamber has shared the stage with nearly every big name in metal over the years. In the late 90s, they opened for Danzig. They have also played festivals and tours alongside major acts such as System of a Down, Insane Clown Posse and Hatebreed.

The band has reunited several times throughout their career. Their first breakup came in 2003, with the band eventually reuniting in 2011 with bassist Chela Rhea Harper. In 2017 Fafara claimed that Coal Chamber was “done forever” and would never again play shows or make music together.

In 2022 Coal Chamber announced their return! As of now there are no plans for new music, but Fafara has not ruled it out. Prior to the reunion Fafara had a near death experience when infected with COVID-19. As a result, his wife reached out to his friends and former band members. After recovering from the illness Dez was inspired and decided to get the band back together.

Fear Factory is an industrial metal act that gained popularity in the early 1990s. Guitarist Dino Cazares is currently the only original member left in the band. Before 2020 Burton C. Bell was the only consistent member in Fear Factory for about 30 years.

Fear Factory is known for their variety of sounds including industrial and nu-metal but also elements of thrash and death metal. Fear Factory is oftentimes viewed as a gateway to lesser known and heavier acts. Many bands cite Fear Factory as a major influence including Machine Head, As I Lay Dying and Slipknot.

The group has released 10 studio albums to date. The first four of these being on Roadrunner records. Their second and third records, Demanufacture and Obsolete, are both certified Gold!

In April of 2021 Fear Factory released their first new music in five years. Prior to selecting their new vocalist, Milo Silvestro, there was a massive audition process featuring upwards of 300 vocalists. Eventually Dino settled on Silvestro after seeing him perform Fear Factory covers online. It appears that Dino and the new Fear Factory lineup are energized and ready to keep bringing the heat with tours and new music.
