Before I get into reviewing the latest Foo Fighters record, I thought I should briefly mention my thoughts on the last album “Medicine At Midnight.” Simply put – This was too big of a departure from the Foo Fighters sound for me. There are moments I like and songs which are rockin’, but as a whole, this wasn’t one of my top Foo records. To me, there’s too much dance-infused pop spread all over the album and it takes away from that classic Foo sound – pounding Drums underneath a wall of guitars!

That being said, the new album “But Here We Are” is a return to form for them. From The opener and first single “Rescued” you can tell this is a band who is out to make rock music. Gone are those dance beats and choir of backup singers. The only issue here? I wanted more! HAHA. It’s 10 tracks, but I could have used 20. Dave is coming off the loss of both Taylor and his own Mom and there’s a tone of dreariness throughout the album. However, it’s done with a touch of hope in an emotional way. Instead of just being down and stagnant.

I know a lot of people are praising this as the best album since “Wasting Light” and maybe it is. Time will tell!
Regardless of that statement being true, there are still some cool moments for sure! Let’s take a look at a few.

  • UNDER YOU

This one gives me an old school Foo vibe. It’s a good thing. Just a straight up rocker with some cool lyrics. There certainly is a lot of emotion on this record.

  • THE GLASS

You can sense the heartache in Dave’s vocals.  This one is easy to hum along to and has some simple playing, but it’s a really interesting song with some great melodies.

  • SHOW ME HOW:

Some cool drumming from Grohl.  And some vocal help from his daughter Violet.  It’s definitely an interesting direction for the Foo Fighters.
