This week in 1970 Black Sabbath released their monstrous album “Paranoid.” I posed the question at the DHA Facebook page “What Are DHA Listeners’ Favorite Black Sabbath Songs.” Of course, I received some terrific responses. Many of which just so happen to be from the Paranoid album!

It seems a band that is as old as Sabbath has made a big impression on so many. And that’s no coincidence. Thanks to your responses I was able to compile this list of New Jersey Metal Fans 6 Favorite Black Sabbath Songs!

Black Sabbath, with Ozzy Osbourne as their tremendous lead singer, is often regarded as creating heavy metal music. The band formed in Birmingham, England, in 1968, and rock music was forever changed. Ozzy’s haunting vocals, combined with Tony Iommi’s masterful guitar riffs, Geezer Butler’s huge bass sound, and Bill Ward’s powerful drumming, created a sound that was darker, heavier, and more eerie than anything that had come before them.

Their debut album, “Black Sabbath,” released in 1970, is often regarded as the birth of heavy metal. The first track, “Black Sabbath,” with its church bell toll and Ozzy’s creepy yell, set up Black Sabbath to be one of the pioneers of metal music. However, their 2nd album Paranoid, provided some of their biggest hits and acts like a blueprint of what to do in the metal genre.

Ozzy Osbourne’s stage presence was also something to behold. His wild, often off-the-wall behavior and very unique voice made him a special figure in the world of rock. Songs like “Paranoid,” “Iron Man,” and “War Pigs” became anthems for their fans and Black Sabbath went on to become one of the most influential rock bands of all time.

They had some challenges along the way, including Ozzy’s struggles with substance abuse, but the band continued to churn out stellar albums. Their albums, such as “Master of Reality,” “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,” and “Sabotage,” showed off the way their sound evolved and how creative they were together.

• WAR PIGS

  Such a unique way to kick off the Paranoid album. There’s a slow build to this one. Great drum fills and Ozzy’s vocals don’t get much better. It’s a terrific way to intro an album!

• CHILDREN OF THE GRAVE

  From The “Master Of Reality” album.  This one has a chugging kind of riff.  And some awesome almost tribal drums from Bill Ward.  Often regarded as one of Sabbath’s best songs, DHA listeners love this one!

   

• IRON MAN

  Those kick drum hits by Ward signify that something is about to come in and smack you!  Then the iconic line – “I am Iron Man”.  The riff kicks in and is just so powerful.  Simple yet heavy.  It’s a great balance of a metal tune mixed with melody.

• The Wizard

  Is there much to say about this one?  Look, it’s a metal based song that has killer harmonica.  Leave it to Sabbath to set their own rules on what works.  The guitars play off the harmonica so well, or maybe vice versa.  Either way, the verse has an awesome heavy power chord riff.  And Ozzy sounds flawless.

• BLACK SABBATH

  Does it get creepier than this?  Church Bells in the distance.  The devils chord.  Haunting vocals by Ozzy.  It’s a really a song that can give you an eerie feeling, but also is a great example of powerful, dark and brooding metal!

• SNOWBLIND

  A Powerful Opening riff.  A solid beat by Bill ward.  And the band sounds like their just jamming out. It really is a cool riff that carries the tune and When Ozzy sings “My Eyes are blind but I can see” it’s so melodic and really helps to tie the song together.
