Soundgarden had such great music. I can’t believe they broke up in 1997.

But I wanted to take a look at The Top 5 Soundgarden Tracks according to New Jersey Fans. It’s hard to pick the best, but these were some favorites among our listeners here at the Rock of New Jersey.

I have a feature on my show called First Call Last Call where I play a themed block of music for the ride home at 5 pm. Before that, at around 4, I post a Question of The Day to the WDHA Facebook page.

Since yesterday was the anniversary of Soundgarden’s break up I thought, let’s ask for the listener’s favorite Soundgarden songs!

The band did reunite in 2010 and put out one more album called “King Animal.” It was a really good release, sounding just like classic Soundgarden, but I wanted to focus the set on everything pre-breakup. They had such a unique sound.

Look, we can argue over who the greatest rock singer is or was, but let’s be honest, Chris Cornell has to be in the Top 20 if not really high on that list.

His voice was so powerful and he had such an amazing range. That couple with Kim Thayil’s playing and unique sound, Ben on bass, and Matt Cameron doing some cool drums, it was a recipe for success.

Although they often got lumped into that 90’s grunge scene, I kind of feel like they had their own unique sound. It was rock mixed with metal and featured a lot of odd sounds and strange experimentation. And it worked really well. Even before the Badmotorfinger record, the early stuff was awesome too.

But what do DHA listeners think? Let’s take a look at the songs that got the most responses for my question yesterday.

Here’s The Top 5 Soundgarden Songs according to New Jersey Fans!

  • JESUS CHRIST POSE

This one is almost metal. Just a banger and Chris sings so passionately on it!

  • MY WAVE

Superunknown is just a fantastic record and this tune is cool with a stutter-stop kind of rhythm that works.  It’s a good one!

  • RUSTY CAGE

Another tune that raises your adrenaline.  It has a bit of a metal tinge to it and some amazing vocals by Chris Cornell.

  • PRETTY NOOSE

I thought Down On The Upside was a bit underrated.  Soundgarden took more chances and really shined on some songs.  This is one of them!

  • BLACK HOLE SUN

A True classic.  I have no idea what it’s about, but that doesn’t matter.  It still hits me emotionally because of the passionate vocals and it’s just a cool slower tune from the band.
