We have breaking news this morning on the Two-Minute Drill! It seems that Giants QB Tommy DeVito's new marketing team has been working overtime to make sure all 15 minutes of fame are seized upon.
Plus Jim Monaghan and Chris Swendeman take a look at the local NBA and NHL teams as we close out the Two-Minute Drill for 2023.
JIM MONAGHAN - Friday morning means the Two-Minute Drill here at 105.5 WDHA on the Morning Jolt. Jim Monaghan along with Chris Swendeman. And Swendeman, we have breaking news this morning on the Two Minute Drill! Are you ready?
CHRIS SWENDEMAN - Oh, boy. Here we go.
JM - New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito has filed new trademarks for "Tommy Cutlets" and "Passing Paisano."
CS - Oh, my goodness.
JM - The filings claim that DeVito plans to sell branded decals, clothing, pasta, pizza, tomato sauces - what about the whole sauce-gravy thing - and energy drinks.
CS - Do you think he tried to patent the Italian hand motion as well and just couldn't get away with it?
JM - Certainly wouldn't surprise me, I'm telling you. I wonder if that means we're going to have to pay every time we say "Tommy Cutlets." No, they wouldn't do that, would they?
CS - I don't know. I mean, you talk about squeezing every ounce of life out of your 15 minutes of fame. They might. I have no idea. At this point, anything is clearly possible.
Hey, I talked to Tommy's agent, Sean Stellato, the other day. He wanted to know if I knew a good pizza place in Morristown. We'll be here all week. Try the cutlets.
Knicks and Nets
JM - As we wrap things up this year. For the year, on the Two Minute Drill, in the NBA, you've got the Knicks and Nets about a third of the way through their respective seasons. Knicks doing pretty well, 16-11, and the Nets a game under .500 both clearly still playoff possibilities for both teams there.
CS - Oh, absolutely. Nets young up and coming, and Thibodeau has got the Knicks playing really strong. They're a hard out. They're not the easy out that the Knicks used to be.
Devils and Rangers
JM - In hockey. I'm a little disappointed by the Devils start. I know we're, what, about a quarter of the way through the season? So far, the Rangers sitting at the top of the Metropolitan Division have been a very nice diversion for New York sports fans.
CS - Yeah. Because coming into the season, you really thought this was going to be kind of a flip flop where the Devils were going to be the ones up top after the strong finish last year with all the young talent they have, and the Rangers were going to be the ones kind of trying to find the middle ground and see where they're at. But the Devils have been beset by injuries to start the season, you know, you never thought you'd talk about the Devils and say these words, that goaltending is just a problem for them right now.
JM - Absolutely. So as we wrap things up, Swendeman, thanks for all your input this year on the Two-Minute Drill. Looking forward to a great 2024.
CS - Absolutely, Jim. Enjoy that vacation next week.
One Man’s Take On Where To Find New Jersey’s Best Pizza
I am on a seemingly never-ending journey on where to find New Jersey's best pizza.
But there's a bit of a problem - I will admit it right now - I am a pizza snob.
When it comes to beer? Smithwick's is my preference but I will gladly drink whatever happens to be cold. So your fridge only has something like Natty Light? You say it's cold? I say bring it on.
I don't drink a lot of hard liquor, but when I do it's rarely top shelf.
But pizza? That's a whole 'nother story. I am CONSTANTLY looking for New Jersey's best pizza.
DISCLAIMER - I lived in the Bronx for nearly eight years, two of them just a couple of blocks away from Arthur Avenue in the Belmont section, also known as Little Italy. I was completely spoiled by the experience.
Restaurants like Mario's, Dominick's, Ann & Tony's - all of them are simply incredible. And don't even get me started on the bakeries. Artuso's Pastry Shop alone is worth the trip across the George Washington Bridge.
MANGIA!
(TRAVELER'S ADVICE - if you're out of the area and you see a sign advertising that they have NYC-style pizza, rest assured that they don't.)
All that having been said, I've found a few places here in New Jersey that come close, and one in particular that gives NYC pizza a run for its money.
La Gondola Pizzeria - Ramsey NJ
La Gondola is in the Ramsey Square Shopping Center on Route 17 North along with Kohl's and Staples. This is hands down the closest I've gotten to the pizza I enjoyed in the Bronx. The crust isn't too thick, the cheese is generous, and the sauce is outstanding. I've driven out of my way more than once going through Bergen County to enjoy a couple of their slices.
King Pizza North - Ramsey NJ
Another Ramsey pizza place! King Pizza North is a little harder to find as it's tucked away on a side street in the center of town, away from Route 17 and Franklin Turnpike.
The pizza crust is pretty close to NYC-style pies and if you're in the mood for something else, I highly recommend the chicken parm sandwich.
Star Tavern - Orange NJ
Like your pizza with a thin crust? Star Tavern in Orange is legendary! Great pizza and cold beer is a killer combination. Even if you're out of the Essex County area, it's definitely worth the drive.
Oh' Brian's On the Green - Clark NJ
Located adjacent to the Hyatt Hills Golf Complex on Raritan Road in Clark, Oh' Brian's On the Green has some tasty bar pies that are an underrated part of the menu which also includes pub grub and a really good craft beer lineup.
And though I have no idea what "Detroit Style Pizza" is, Oh' Brian's has a Sausage & Ricotta Detroit Style bar pie that is outrageously good. There's also an outstanding selection of beers on tap, a friendly wait staff, and live music on the weekends.
Kinchley's Tavern - Ramsey NJ
And yet another Ramsey pizza place!
Kinchley's ultra-thin crust pizza is simply outstanding. And there are TEN TAPS with a terrific selection of beers.
