Surging Knicks, Rangers Making Madison Square Garden THE Place To Be
With the New York Rangers and Knicks both on the way to their respective postseason series, Madison Square Garden has been a VERY fun place to be this year.
In fact, New York fans might be tempted to think back to 1994 when the Knicks and the Rangers won the Stanley Cup.
This morning on the WDHA Two-Minute Drill, Jim Monaghan and Chris Swendeman talk about the upcoming playoffs, as well as Jack Leiter’s Major League debut.
New York Knicks
The Knicks, who finished the season with a record of 50-32, placed second in the Eastern Conference, 14 games behind the Boston Celtics who ran roughshod over the rest of the league.
Offensively, the Knicks ranked 19th in the league during the regular season. Where they really stood out was in offensive rebounding where they led the league.
Their best month? January where they posted a 14-2 record.
The Knicks open against the #7 Eastern Conference seed Philadelphia 76ers Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
If all goes according to plan, they should have a relatively quick run to the Conference finals where more than likely the Celtics will be waiting for them.
Back in 1994 the Knicks made it all the way to the NBA Finals.
This year?
New York Rangers
The Rangers led the entire league in regular season wins this year.
They scored the 6th most goals in the NHL but perhaps most important, they allowed the 7th fewest goals.
So you can completely understand why Rangers fans have visions of 1994 dancing in their heads.
You remember 1994.
After finishing first in the 1994 regular season, the Rangers swept the Islanders in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Then, they beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in five games in the Conference semis.
That’s when they ran into the New Jersey Devils.
With the Devils holding a 3 games to 2 lead, Mark Messier guaranteed a Rangers win…and then went out and led the team.
Ultimately the Rangers would beat the Vancouver Canucks in 7 games to win their first Stanley Cup since 1940.
The Rangers open their (hopefully long) playoff run with a series against the Washington Capitals on Sunday at the Garden.
