J.D. Martinez Still Not Ready To Help the New York Mets Yet
J.D. Martinez, who is currently working his way back to game shape at the New York Mets training facility in Port St. Lucie, still is not ready to help the Mets.
In fact, we really don’t know when he might be ready. What we do know is that it most likely will not be until until after this weekend in Cincinnati.
What Martinez is doing now
While the ideal situation would be to have Martinez get some game action with AAA Syracuse, the weather has been even worse in upstate New York than it has here, which means that we might have to wait even longer for Martinez to arrive.
So what that means for the time being is Martinez getting some at bats in extended spring training while the Mets hope that the Immortal Tyrone Taylor can catch lightning in a bottle as he did in Thursday’s come-from-behind win against the Tigers.
How bad is it right now for the Mets?
For one, you have to go back to 2005 to find the last time the New York Mets began a season 0-5.
Five-game losing streaks are an annoyance in June. When you start the season with one, it casts a pallor over the entire locker room.
The mood among the fanbase is so bad that you have some thinking that maybe things weren’t so bad under the Wilpons after all.

The offense has been pretty much nonexistent, with a team batting average of just .173, which is the lowest in the National League.
You need more numbers?
Brandon Nimmo, Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil are a combined 3-for-55 (.055) this season.

Thankfully, Pete Alonso is been one of the more consistent batters in the lineup.
Pitching numbers
The Mets team ERA (2.37) is the third lowest in Major League Baseball (behind the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers) and the lowest in the National League.
If the Mets can just generate some offense to go with that kind of mound work, the arrival of J.D. Martinez should give the team a far more competitive balance.
