WDHA’s 2-Minute Drill – Is Anyone On the Mets Roster Safe At the Trade Deadline
Welcome to the newest feature on the WDHA Morning Jolt – WDHA’s 2-Minute Drill.
Each Friday, Jim Monaghan and Chris Swendeman will examine a sports story with a local impact.
On this inaugural episode, the focus is on the New York Mets and the disaster that has been the 2023 season.
Coming into the year, hopes were high. The team had performed well under manager Buck Showalter in 2022, Justin Verlander had been added to the rotation alongside Max Scherzer and the message from owner Steve Cohen was unmistakable – the time to win is NOW!
And then Edwin Diaz went down with a season-ending injury in the World Baseball Classic and the wheels were starting to fall off even before the car left the driveway.
Coming into the weekend, the Mets put together a nice little winning streak, and while they have five teams to jump over just for a Wild Card spot, there are still close to 12 weeks left in the regular season in which to make a move.
With the trade deadline coming at the end of August, there will be a lot of decisions to be made. Some of those decisions may not be popular with Mets fans.

MLB is the only professional sport in the country where each team has its own dedicated stadium. For example, in the NFL, the Jets and Giants share Metlife Stadium. Many NBA team share their home arena with the NHL team in their city. In professional baseball, each of the 30 teams has their own home field that is theirs alone. This enables the organization to build more character specific to the club.
The interior of an MLB ballpark is all about the players. Though there is a mysterious aura about the clubhouse, given that they are underground. The common thread in modern-day construction is centered around the ballclub. The intent is to make each clubhouse comfortable, hi-tech, and private for the players and coaches. The rest of the stadium is all about the fan experience.
