Baseball Is Back – A 2024 Preview of the Mets and Yankees
Major League Baseball is back with the two best words in the English language being heard everywhere on Thursday – PLAY BALL!
This morning on the Two-Minute Drill, Chris Swendeman and I preview the 2024 Mets and Yankees, both of whom come into the new season with pretty solid lineups and a number of pitching questions.
New York Mets – offense
The signing of J.D. Martinez instantly gave the Mets a solid middle-of-the-lineup type of hitter who not only lengthens the lineup, but should make it harder to pitch to Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso.
Think about it – assuming all three play up to the levels on the back of their respective baseball cards, if you pitch around one, you still have to deal with the other two.
New York Mets – pitching
With the return of Edwin Diaz, the bullpen immediately improved. The questions will center around Luis Severino staying healthy, and Sean Manaea being effective (his new “sweeper” pitch was a big off-season topic).
New York Yankees – offense
You can sum the Yankees offense up quite simply – Juan Soto.
Pending the health of D.J. LeMahieu (already on the IL), Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton (we all know it’s “when” not “if” he will be on the IL), and Aaron Judge, Soto does for the Yankees what J.D. Martinez should do for the Mets.
The Yankees won’t beat teams; they might bludgeon them all summer.
New York Yankees – pitching
Gerrit Cole starting the season on the IL is a Yankee fan’s worst nightmare because since it’s his elbow, you’ll be holding your breath all season.
Carlos Rodon will hopefully be better than last year, but he had a shaky spring. MLB hitters figured Nestor Cortez out in 2023, and it remains to be seen how Marcus Stroman’s act will play out in the Bronx.
2024 Baseball Prediction
I’m picking both teams to make the playoffs, but injuries will have the Mets out in the first round. Once injuries kick in for the Yankees, they may not have enough depth to make a deep run in the playoffs.
