The Howell 276- Rosie’s Amazing Rescue Story
The Howell 276- 276 dogs in one ranch-style home. Rosie Carr was one of them. The 8th Anniversary of Rosie Carr’s amazing rescue story is – June 3rd- What an event.
It’s Terrie Carr and my dog Rosie is a rescue dog, but many may not know her backstory. It’s pretty wild and she’s a VERY lucky girl to have been rescued as a newborn pup from such horrific conditions.
Let’s Rewind To When I Was Watching The News!
It was literally the day BEFORE our WDHA Dog Days of Summer event in 2016 and I saw on the local news that 276 small dogs of all ages were rescued from a hoarding case in Howell New Jersey. I could NOT believe what I was seeing on TV, dogs being brought out, being given oxygen, and vaccinations, shaking, wrapped up in towels, and blankets with members of the Monmouth County SPCA in tow and many shelter groups with triage set up to treat them. It was crazy and it broke my heart. It was one of the state’s largest hoarding rescue cases in history.
Fast forward to the next day at our Dog Days event, I met up with my friend, Meredith Petrillo from The Denville Animal Shelter who told me that she (along with many groups including St. Huberts and Monmouth County SPCA) had taken in some of the dogs including moms and newborn puppies. The dogs were terrified, had not been out of cages, fighting for their lives trying to climb above the filth and horror of their lives, so I asked Meredith once the dogs decompressed, if I could stop by the shelter, drop off some supplies and see the pups rescued from this awful situation. I did. About 3-4 weeks later- That’s when I saw Rosie.

It Was Love At First Site-
Below are some photos I saw on the Friends Of The Denville Animal Shelter Facebook page. I met Rosie for the first time when she was just a few weeks old. I went to the shelter to drop off food and visit the puppies and I fell in love with her. She was there with her mom, who was pretty banged up. She was missing fur, scabs, super thin, but taking great care of Rosie and her two siblings.
There was something about this strong teeny tiny little girl that stayed on my mind. I was madly in love with my senior dog Scarlet who was just shy of ten years old, and I wasn’t looking for a second pup, but I knew Rosie would be ours. I just knew it. I visited the shelter at least 4 times (as Rosie was too young to leave her mama) and saw this scrappy, bossy, little scruffy mutt running around like mad! She was a firecracker! I believe that the sounds and vibe of that situation led Rosie to be very afraid as a puppy. She was totally afraid of Scarlet, but in time, they became best friends. Scarlet was Rosie’s protector.
I’m so grateful for the care that The Denville Animal Shelter gave Rosie and all of the dogs they took in, and thankfully Rosie’s mom recovered and was adopted by an awesome family. Rosie hasn’t seen her since! And I recently heard from a WDHA listener who has Rosie’s brother. It’s so nice to know these pups who had such a terrible beginning are living their best lives. I know Rosie sure is. She has even been featured in a book about rescue dogs.

While we don’t know what our rescue dogs went through, we do know we can change their future. As they say- Rescuing a dog doesn’t change the world, but it changes the world for that dog. I’m so grateful that I found Rosie. She is the best dog, despite a horrible start.
