Jerry Cantrell on Potentially Making Music with James Hetfield
Jerry Cantrell and James Hetfield have been friends for years and have jammed together on various occasions. However, could they end up making music together one day?
It’s a question Cantrell responded to from a fan in a new chat with Metal Hammer. Cantrell says it’s something he and Hetfield have “kind of” talked about, but there’s never been a “formal conversation.”
Cantrell does detail how he and Hetfield have jammed together with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett before. He also recalled a time spending a few days at Hetfield’s home and the two of them playing their guitars in the kitchen and on the porch.
The Alice in Chains guitarist said, “It’s something I’d be really curious about, even to just write a song with him. As for whether it’d turn into something more than that, he’s got a pretty demanding day job. Ha ha! So I’d understand if it never comes to be.”
Back in 2020, Cantrell penned a tribute to Hetfield that was published on the Metallica frontman’s August 3 birthday. In the tribute, Cantrell explained what sets Hetfield apart from all the other rhythm guitarists and lead singers in rock.
“Nobody else commands the same kind of respect and attention without it being self-seeking or egocentric,” wrote Cantrell. “[Hetfield’s] all about the music; all about the fun and the celebration and the connection with the fans…He took an underground thing and took it worldwide.”
