MLB Trade Deadline Finds Mets and Yankees Going In Different Directions
The MLB trade deadline is just four days away and the Mets and Yankees are approaching it from completely different directions.
MLB Trade Deadline – WDHA’s Two-Minute Drill
After getting swept at home by the crosstown-rival Mets, and having lost 22 of their last 32 games, Yankees fans were celebrating the fact that Thursday was an off day for the team.
Meanwhile across the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge,, not only are Mets fans excited, but so is their owner, too.
Both teams are looking at the playoffs from a Wild Card scenario, but the Mets look more like a team just a player or two away from making a deep run in October, while the Yankees have as many as six holes to fill.
Mets
It’s the bullpen.
Despite Jake Diekman striking out Aaron Judge looking in Tuesday’s 3-2 Met thriller, and Adam Ottavino emerging from a bases-loaded jam unscathed in Wednesday’s blowout win, neither of those two relievers are the type of lockdown pitcher you want to see coming out of the bullpen late in a tight game.
Yankees
We’ve been saying it for weeks – the infield is a mess, especially at the corner positions.
Outside of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, no one in the lineup scares you. That might change when Giancarlo Stanton returns, but then you have to ask yourself how long it will be until the next time Stanton gets hurt.
They don’t have a leadoff hitter, nor do they have a legit cleanup hitter.
And let’s not leave the pitching out of this either – starting pitchers Carlos Rodón and Nestor Cortes are struggling a bit and Gerrit Cole has allowed 9 home runs in his 7 starts.
And a bullpen arm would be nice.
For GM Brian Cashman, the odds of him filling all those holes in less than a week aren’t good, which could mean another quick exit for the Yankees once the playoffs begin.
