You See A Church Congregation, Florida Man Sees Victims For His Next Fraud
FLORIDA MAN STRIKES AGAIN!
DATELINE – Naples FL
I don’t know about you, but when I go to church, it’s maybe for some quiet time, kind of relax a little bit, clear my conscience, maybe spend some quiet time with the Lord, be with some friends, a sense of community.
Well, when Naples, Florida Man Brent Seaman attended his church, he saw pews filled with investment fraud targets, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
There’s a lot going on here.
An SEC complaint said that Seaman ripped off $35 million from about 60 of those people in what turned into a Ponzi scheme. Congregation apparently has a lot of money. Many of these investors were elderly, retired, and connected to the Naples church where Seaman was an active member, according to the complaint filed in Miami Federal Court.
These are his friends. These are his neighbors. “Hey, have I got a deal for you!”
Legally, Seaman and a couple of companies that he’s involved with were charged, but he does not admit or deny the complaint’s allegations. However, he has agreed to let a court decide just how deep he will have to go into his wallet for disgorgement, prejudgment interest, and a civil penalty.
Oh, but wait, there’s more, because Florida Woman gets involved, and that would be Brent Seamans wife, Jana. She has agreed to pay more than $750,000 in disgorgement and interest. There’s another holding company of which she is the manager, and they’ve got to pay a ton of money as well.
Now, neither Florida Man nor Florida Woman has yet been charged in criminal court.
And yes, there’s even more, because Seaman filed for bankruptcy back in 2014. And one of these companies that he claims he owned, well, supposedly, it had just $98 in its bank account.
Seaman misappropriated millions of investor funds for his own use and used millions of additional investor funds to make Ponzi like distributions to investors.
The scheme lasted until September of last year. And this isn’t even his first time pulling something like this, because online federal court records show that back in March of 2001, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud in Indianapolis federal court and was sentenced to 17 months in prison and $940,000 in restitution.
So, again, we’re waiting to find out exactly what happened here. But I don’t know about you, but I think inside a church, whether you believe or not, whether you’re a believer, you don’t go to church, you do whatever, I think that’s the last place I’m trying to pull something like this off.
