An Honest Take On Pearl Jam’s New Song Dark Matter
Pearl Jam released their first single from their upcoming new album and before they did, there was a lot of buzz. In recent interviews it was said that this album turned out heavier than expected. I was excited because I loved the early Pearl Jam which had a bit more of a rockin’ vibe. While I appreciate their entire catalog, I was hyped for a heavier direction. So what did we get? “Dark Matter.” Here’s Mike Anthony’s honest take on Pearl Jam’s new song Dark Matter.
Pearl Jam with An Edge
This one starts up with Matt Cameron doing a cool little drum intro before the guitars kick in. It’s definitely got a bit of an edge to it. It has a darker feel than you would expect and Eddie sounds so good! I haven’t read or dissected the lyrics yet, but there’s some angst that comes across. It sounds as if Vedder is pissed and it works so well against the guitar riffs and great drumming from Cameron.
I’m not going to say it sounds like it could fit on their debut album “TEN”. And that’s because it’s got it’s own unique vibe. While I would agree that it leans in a heavier direction – this sounds fresh and modern and takes Pearl Jam to a whole other level. Oh and it’s got a little guitar solo, which sounds so cool. In a world of modern rock that tends to shy away from solos, Pearl Jam isn’t afraid to dive in and give us a fun one.
I’m hoping we get more of the same on the new album. It comes out in April and is also called Dark Matter. I don’t mind a grittier, heavier, dark vibes Pearl Jam at all. It’s different than what we’ve heard from them over the last few albums. And I have to say……I’m kind of blown away! Here’s to a phenomenal new record, which I’ll be buying on Day One!
