In memory of the inventor’s passing, we celebrate the Pop-Tart
I’m not exactly sure why, but I have very vivid memories of my first Pop-Tart.
My dad called me into the kitchen and said, “You have to try this!”
If you know me, you know I have a bit of a sweet tooth, something I inherited from both parents. My mom loved chocolate, and my dad could sometimes be found eating a piece of cherry pie at 7 AM for breakfast.
Which brings us back to Pop-Tarts.
I’m not sure where or how my dad found out about them, but he had a box of brown sugar cinnamon ones and from the first moment I took a bite, I was hooked.
We had Pop-Tarts for breakfast. We had Pop-Tarts for an after-school snack.
And if I wanted a little extra fruit in my diet, well bring on the strawberry-flavored Pop-Tarts!
But wait…there’s more.
I discovered that if you took a Pop-Tart right out of the toaster and combined it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, you have one of the Ultimate Kid Desserts!
Pop Tart à la Mode!
I mention this because a guy named Bill Post passed away on February 10. You may not know who he was, but he was a former Keebler employee, who was credited with inventing Pop-Tarts.
At first, there were just four flavors – strawberry, blueberry, the aforementioned brown sugar cinnamon, and apple currant. Later frostings would be added and additional flavors totaling more than 20 different varieties.
My go-to Pop-Tart is still brown sugar cinnamon, but if I really want to spice things up, I go for the frosted version.
And yes, I am still tempted to top it off with a scoop of ice cream.
Thanks, Bill Post.
